Project Home Cloud

I built my own cloud.
The idea was to gain hands-on experience with modern cloud technologies. At the time, there wasn’t (and still isn’t) any grand plan for what to do with it — just a desire to explore and learn.

The project began when I overheard a conversation between two colleagues. One had recently purchased a Synology NAS and, judging by their discussion, seemed to have overpaid. Curious, I started researching home NAS solutions and stumbled across a “NAS board” for just €40. Adding the cost of storage drives, I realised I could potentially set up a home cloud storage system for under €100.

For those unfamiliar, NAS stands for Network Attached Storage. Essentially, it’s a system that provides storage accessible to any device on the same network.

My original plan was simple:

  • Set up a NAS server.
  • Install Kubernetes on my old Raspberry Pi.
  • Profit?

Fast forward a year, and I’m finally writing my first blog entry about this project—on my mobile phone, no less. The NAS board and a 1TB SSD arrived about a year ago, but as with many side projects, things didn’t go quite as planned. Still, here I am, excited to share my journey of building my own cloud.
